You hear it all the time: processed foods are bad for you. But do you know WHY?
Here is the simplest explanation: our bodies were not made to process chemical additives into nutrients that they can use. So these chemicals get absorbed for an indefinite period of time, delaying digestion and adding extra toxins to our blood, tissues and organs, and extra pounds to our weight..
Yep, processed foods make us fat–another illustration of the fact that it’s not all about the calories. Perservatives such as sodium nitrated (found in hot dogs, bacon, ham and other processed foods) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are stored in our fat cells.
Here’s a bit more info about processed foods: they
~ruin your tastebuds
~have deadly additives
~contain hidden sugar, salt and harmful fats
~have mystery ingredients… like “edible offal,” which translated means animal skin, snouts, ears, esophagi, etc…
~have no nutritional value
~are fortified with synthetics that cannot be processed by our bodies
~are actually more expensive than fruits and vegetables
~are dead! Most of the goodness is cooked or processed out
~make you fat!
Genetically Engineered Foods
This is another kind of food that is new to humans! There is a radically new technology out there that combines genes of dissimilar and unrelated species and permanently alters their genetic codes. Novel organisms are created that will pass the genetic changes on to their offspring through heredity. This obviously causes unprecedented social and ethical concerns: they could wreck havoc with the environment through genetically engineered organisms that are released from the labs, gene-splicing could result in unanticipated outcomes and dangerous surprises, foreign genes from genetically engineered plants could be carried by pollen, insects, wind or rain and flow into other crops, and they will almost certainly endanger species and reduce biological diversity, toxic and allergic reactions in humans…
So, what are we to do? Well, being aware is the first step! Then, use what you know to choose carefully what you eat:
~there are now genetically engineered tomatoes, potatoes, corn, soy, yellow crook neck squash, canola oil, cotton seed oil, papaya… these are the foods to buy “organic” if you want to know where they came from!
~Read labels carefully:
*Avoid BGH (bovine growth hormone) in milk and milk products, avoid aspartame, which is made up of three chemicals and a genetically engineered enzyme. By the way, aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde in the body!
*avoid amylase (in breads, flour, cereals and starches), catalase (in soft drinks, egg whites, liquid whey) and lactase, which are genetically engineered additives and enzymes.
And here’s another bit of info to make you aware of the danger of processed foods:
Sugar hinders the body’s immune system and predisposes people to allergies and infections. The number, shape and activity of white blood cells are adversely affected by excessive sugar consumption.
White flour is made by stripping the grain of virtually all its nutrients (fiber, vitamins, minerals, essential oils and protein), so it becomes a “dead” food. Then it is enriches with some other vitamins, but many nutrients are not replenished. Fiber is missing, causing them to stick to the walls of the intestines, causing blockages rather than helping move thins through quickly and smoothly. White rice goes through essentially the same process as white flour…
Aspartame is made up of three chemicals, aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. The book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, by James and Phyllis Balsh lists aspartame under the category of “chemical poison,” and this is truly what it is…
This wasn’t a fun post to write. But the good news is: there is plenty of real food out there! Go out and enjoy it fully!
